cross-cultural gardens
For more than 10 years now cross-cultural gardens enrich German cities. They are a platform for communication, encounter and living together between people with and without migrant background. The gardens are a melting pot for different milieus, generations and forms of living. The common activity helps to find the same interest, which creates new connections and belongings.
In addition to the integration of migrants, another main emphasis is the ecology of the city. Cross-cultural gardens use the free space of cities and create in this way a stronger sensibility for the environment. Thus, new methods which give impulses for cross-cultural forms of environmental education can be tested.
The exchange between the people is supported through the gardening. On one hand concerning the individual knowledge and skills, on the other trough the planted foods. Subsequently deficiency can be eliminated and diversity can be in the life of the gardeners. Because of this aspect the migrants can gain new confidence since their knowledge is appreciated by the society. As a consequence of this positive and productive experience the partly missing social engagement can be activated.
